CamSur celebrates the 120th Independence Day Pays tribute to Bicolano revoluntionary through monument, giant flag raising
“It is our pride to have a huge story to tell. We have Vicong who fought in our land to free the people of our nation,” said Minalabac Mayor Christopher Lizardo.

The Provincial Government celebrated the 120th Independence Day at the municipality of Minalabac on the 12th of June 2018. The province paid tribute to CamSur’s very own General Ludovico Arejola through the unveiling of the monument built in his honor. The momentous unveiling was facilitated by Governor Miguel Luis Villafuerte, Mayor Lizardo, and the descendants of General Arejola. The raising of the 17x34ft Philippine flag became the highlight of the event.

The celebration began with the traditional Independence Day parade participated in by the 9th ID Philippine Army, Camarines Sur Provincial Police Office, local government officials, Department of Education, teachers, students and the residents of Minalabac in traditional Filipino costumes followed by the re-enactment of the march of General Arejola with his troops and his farewell speech performed at the balcony of the Minalabac Municipal Hall.

Sa panahon natin ngayon, napakahirap nang makahanap ng isang tulad ni Heneral Arejola. Pero alam niyo ba kung ano ang mas mahirap pa kaysa dito? Ito ay ang hubugin ang atin sarili upang maging kagaya ng isang Heneral Arejola,” said Governor Villafuerte who challenged the crowd to be inspired by the Independence Day celebration to become productive citizens of the province.

“We will forever honor the bravery of our fallen heroes and continue in delivering truthful service to our people like they did,” said Brigadier General Arnulfo Matanguihan of AF-9ID Philippine Army who emphasized the significance of emulating the lives of those who fought bravely for our country and the essential role of their service in bringing peace.

General Ludovico Arejola was born and raised in Naga City. He was the commander of Filipino forces in Ambos Camarines who led the fight against the Americans. He gathered troops composed of tiradores, machiteros, anitan and damas who bravely fought with him for our country’s independence in the historic lands of Minalabac.
